I’m a Writer?

A writer without a pen and notepad? Why that’s like a photographer without their favorite camera.-Sparkly Girl

Yes, before I post anything I write it out in my notebook. I carry that thing with me everywhere. I just never know when the mood to write will strike. I literally freak out when I can’t find a pen. Seriously, I freak the fuck out!

Writer. I remember the first time I heard that word to describe me. It was Beck that said it. My sweet Beck. My Westland Homey. I told her I’d written a little something for Austin, her son that was leaving for Marine boot camp. I planned to read it at his going away party.

We sat around the fire pit, everyone was drinking, laughing. Having a good time. It’d been awhile since I’d hung out with my Swim Mommas. We’re a bawdy bunch of broads. But we love each other fiercely. The night was warm, but mild. The fire bright. The company good. The conversation plentiful. And there was moonshine. Of course I had to have a sip!

I stood up, grabbed Aus and pulled him close to the fire. We were standing there with everyone just watching us. Beck told everyone to shut the hell up. She said, listen to Nae. She’s a writer and she wrote something for Aus. It wasn’t much. Just a sweet goodbye, to tell him how proud we all were of him. I ended it with the words Semper Fi! He teared up. So did I. I hugged that boy hard! Everyone clapped and cheered. Standing there hugging that young man in front of my friends, I really did feel like I was, a writer….. That my words mattered.

As I write this, I think about that evening. It brings back that feeling, that rush. I know there is nothing in this world quite like the feeling I get when I write. Nothing….

  1. The power of words! I agree, I always need a notebook handy to write down my stray thoughts. You just never know when they are going to come. I hope you printed a copy for Aus to take with him. It is wonderful that he appreciated what you had to say.

    • I sent him a copy for sure. He needs to remember how proud we are of him. It’ll help him through the tough times. When he wants to quit. Our words are powerful. Even if they are only read by our followers. Cheers honey. And thanks for reading.

  2. Wow. A writer. Am I one? When friends, who know about my blog, tell others I’m a writer, I cringe. But deep inside, I feel good. Though not high-caliber, it still feels good to be called a writer.

It’s nice to know that despite everybody becoming a techie, there are still a few who prefer the old-fashioned way. Like you, I always bring my mini green notebook and green-inked pen with me. When it comes to book…Kindle? What’s that?

    • Yes honey we are writers. We just have better avenues to share our craft. I’m glad we do. It’s nice to share. To become better at what we love. As for the Kindle I’m with you on that. I have one but rarely use it. I’d rather go to a used bookstore and find an old book. It’s fun to think of the history of the book. Who’s read it. Who’s touched it. Think of their fingerprints on the cover. To wonder where their mind wandered as they devoured it. Thanks Darlin’ I think I have a new blog post brewing in this blonde brain of mine. Thanks for the comment and for reading.

      • Yes the smell of an old book. Why, there’s nothing like it. The yellowed pages. Sigh. I have an old copy of The Stand by Stephen King. I read it every summer. I’ve had that book for 25 years. It still begs to be read by me, every summer. Thanks for the bombshell comment sweetie. I love it. Giggle.

      • OH MY GOD! Stephen King! I remember Needful Things. It used to haunt me every night. Now where did I place that? It must have been all dusty somewhere.
