The Beauty of Springtime….

The naked earth is warm with Spring,
And with green grass and bursting trees
Leans to the sun’s kiss glorying,
And quivers in the sunny breeze.
~Julian Grenfell

When everything is new and smells of Earth and mud…. It’s the promise of newness that gets to me I think. I like the fact that my world is in a cycle of renewal. That the grass will go from brown to green, the trees will bud, and the air is redolent with the blooms of daffodils, crocuses and tulips. The lilacs are my favorite though. I do believe that God put them on the Earth just for me. The heady sweet aroma that comes from that flowering tree makes me whole.

The animals are waking from hibernation. It seems there are babies everywhere. Human and animal. I even feel new and alive. Hopeful for the coming season. I know that we’ll be able to open our summer cottage soon. That we’ll get to see old friends that we haven’t seen all winter. That I’ll get to walk around barefoot every day and feel the warm kiss of sun on my cheeks and nose. Ah to be barefoot. Is there any better feeling?

The patio will become a favorite hangout for Roger Darling, the doggies and me. We’ll dread the spreading twilight because we won’t want to go inside. But we’ll head in when we see the bats start flying overhead. When friends come over the patio is where we reside. Who wants to be inside? We’ve been cooped up all winter…..

At our summer place we grab a drink, and perch ourselves in our patio chairs waiting for our family and friends to bring their drinks and have a seat with us. There’s nothing like an impromptu meeting on the corner patio at Rog and Nae’s. You never know what the subject of the day/night will be. It could be religion, politics, cooking, even sex. You just never know. And of course there is always laughter. So much so that we have tears streaming down our faces. We talk into the wee hours about everything. Sometimes there’s a bonfire if the weather is just right.

Today is a dreary one, but at least it’s warm. I dream of the rest of this glorious week. The warmth, the sun, the smell of thawing earth, and the sound of birds in the early hours of the day. Oh the beauty of Springtime….. My most favorite time of year.
